In this video we talk to Chris Kirby from the LACE Payroll team to give us a short synopsis on our whitepaper – Optimal payroll starts with the foundations – that digs into the key pillars based on our experience of multiple client projects over the years, to deliver a world-class Payroll function.
- How can you drive greater consistency and cross-functional collaboration across the end-to-end cycle while reducing operational risk?
- How do you leverage technology to reduce manual errors and automate repetitive tasks?
- What are the skills required to navigate the changing role that the Payroll department plays?
- What robust governance, processes and systems need to be put in place?
- How can you streamline payroll processes through optimisation, standardisation and monitor performance?
- What does the Payroll team of the future need to do to ensure they are equipped for change as ‘business as usual (BAU)’?
- How do you foster a culture of continuous learning?
Chris provides a quick overview of why we wrote the paper (which you can download using the above link), as well as the key things Payroll teams need to think about when thinking about taking their function to the next level.

00:00 Hello all, Chris Howard from Lace Partners. I am joined by Chris Kirby from our payroll practice.
00:17 Chris, you have written a white paper. It’s called Optimal Payroll Starts with the Foundations. And I want you to
00:26 take maybe just 60 to 90 seconds today. We’ll let you run over a little bit because there are seven pillars. Uh and so seven sections to go over, but if you can just sort of talk us through the
00:38 white paper, why we wrote it and then just maybe uh go through the pillars as well. Absolutely. So I think you’re right, the seven pillars. I think the concept of the white paper is to bring
00:49 everything together. I think the majority of clients we work with, the majority of issues we deal with, they’re focused or they’re born from one of the issues, one area. So technology is not
00:59 working. You know, we need to optimize what we do around processes or something like that. The reality is there is never one thing because they all support each other. So the idea of
01:09 this was just to paint that holistic landscape, make sure we, you know, get the message across around you have to look at this holistically. So if you do have an issue with technology actually it might just be an issue upstream
01:21 that’s manifesting in technology. Um if you’ve got an issue with the skills around the payroll team that might be linked to the operating model as opposed to the people you know and I think one of the core sort of pillars we’ve
01:33 included in there is one that’s often overlooked around sort of mindset and around the how that links in with training um and just the capability that people have around that. So it’s a real
01:44 holistic look at what it takes to optimize payroll and operate optimally. Brilliant. So if you want to download the white paper, there is a link on the website. You can go to the insight section. You go to the white paper
01:55 section. It’s called, as I said at the beginning, optimal payroll starts with the foundations.
