AI and HR – what’s all the fuss about?

In this edition of our weekly HR on the Offensive livestream, Chris and Charlie Frost talk all things AI. Charlie is LACE’s resident AI specialist and over the last six months he’s been keeping an eye on the AI landscape and how it could impact HR. We’re going to delve in to some of the hot topics we think HR professionals should at least have an overview on, including information like the UK Governments thinking on AI regulations, the role of HR when it comes to enabling AI, how change management might impact, etc.

Charlie emphasises that while AI buzz often centres around big, abstract numbers it’s the practical, day-to-day implications that really matter to HR teams. What’s changed most significantly is accessibility. Tools like ChatGPT are now widely available and already in regular use by employees, whether sanctioned by employers or not. That shift alone lowers the barrier to adoption and creates a pressing need for HR leaders to engage with AI as both a tool for productivity and a topic of governance.

Charlie highlights that AI is no longer just a back-office experiment. It’s being actively discussed in boardrooms and investor conversations, not just as a futuristic concept, but as a solution to today’s business challenges. He introduces Amara’s Law to explain how AI’s short-term impact may be overestimated, while its long-term disruption could be far greater than expected. In other words, HR should start planning now—not out of fear, but with foresight.

We are unlikely to suddenly all be out of the job. It’ll be how we can pivot and augment to use these tools differently.

Charlie Frost

HR doesn’t need to be AI experts overnight, but it does need to start asking the right questions. By being proactive now, rather than reactive later, people teams can ensure they remain at the centre of shaping how AI changes work—for the better.
